Various
scientifically research based character development programs are
presented in Ardmore City Schools. These programs provide students the
opportunity to acquire character development skills that may be
beneficial from early childhood to secondary and beyond. Following is a
brief summary of the programs Ardmore City Schools utilizes.
Second Step
A
violence prevention curriculum whose target audience is preschool
through middle school. This curriculum focuses on three areas: empathy,
impulse control and problem solving, and anger/emotion management.
Boys Town Social Skills
This
program emphasizes development of sixteen essential social skills. The
skills help students navigate from simple social interactions to more
complex social interactions in their day to day activities. It was
developed at Boys Town, Omaha, Nebraska.
Kiwanis Terrific Kids
The
Ardmore Kiwanis sponsor their Terrific Kids program at Franklin and
Jefferson elementary. One student from each elementary class is
recognized monthly for a specific trait they exhibit that exemplifies
good character. The Kiwanians attend each celebration to honor the
students, and encourage continued good character development.
Great Expectations
This
program is guided by six tenets and seventeen classroom practices.
These practices, used daily in classrooms, assist students in becoming
self-directed learners, productive citizens, effective communicators,
critical thinkers, and cooperative contributors to the classroom as
well as society.
