Dear Charles Evans Students and Families,
To both our returning students and new students, my staff and I are very excited for the coming school year. We are looking forward to seeing so many familiar and new faces. We are confident that the 2015-2016 school year will be the best yet!
This year we are continuing our focus on AVID [Advancement Via Individual Determination] for our third through fifth grade classrooms. AVID strategies and skills will help each student become successful and skilled in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and rigorous coursework. Student binders and planners are a key component of AVID; families should see these tools throughout the year. The goal of the AVID program is to move every student toward college readiness and to help each find his/her pathway to success.
We are also moving further with our implementation of the Great Expectations Life Principles and 17 Classroom Practices. As visitors to our building, classrooms, and All Star Rallies, you will see these efforts in action.
For our first and second graders, families will also see student planners, which will come home daily. The planner is a tool for daily parent – teacher communication; and it is also where your child will begin learning the organizational habits of writing down the day’s lessons and homework or studying needs for the evening. I encourage each family to monitor their child’s notebooks and backpacks daily.
Next, our first school event is Meet and Greet, which is on Monday, August 17th from 5:30 PM-7:00 PM. Students may bring their school supplies and meet his/her teacher. Lastly, our school day begins at 8:00 AM and dismisses at 3:05 PM; please remember that students arriving after 8:00 am are tardy and students who leave before 3:05 are considered early out.
In closing, please follow the district and Charles Evans website for upcoming events and announcements. Our mission this year is borrowed from Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” My staff and I look forward to working with you and your child to accomplish this.
